Mayor Details Free Junk Drop-off Day

Semi-annual Bulk Waste and Junk Disposal is Sunday, April 15

LOUISVILLE (March 14, 2007) – Mayor Jerry Abramson today outlined plans for the semi-annual junk disposal program to help residents with spring cleaning.  The free drop-off day for Louisville residents is Sunday, April 15.

Residents can dispose of junk and bulk waste items from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Waste Management Outer Loop Landfill, 2673 Outer Loop. More than 500 residents took advantage of the free service last spring and brought in more than 263 tons of junk – 25 tons of the total collection were recycled.

“This partnership allows our residents to dispose of unwanted junk and clutter in an appropriate and responsible way, and helps make our community a more attractive place to call home,” Abramson said. “The city is able to properly dispose of and recycle these items, and I’m pleased we can offer this service at no cost to residents.”

Citizens are able to dispose of bulky junk items not accepted by regular garbage collection; such as appliances, furniture and mattresses. The metal from appliances is recycled, which saves landfill space, and Freon is properly removed to protect the environment. Residents participating in the program are asked to separate metal items from other junk so they can be processed for recycling.

Items that will not be accepted at the landfill include yard waste (grass, limbs, leaves, etc.), hazardous materials, paint, tires and commercial trash.

Materials such as oil and lead-based paints, lawn fertilizers, batteries and household chemicals can be taken to the Louisville Metro Hazardous Materials Collection Center, known as HAZ BIN, 7501 Grade Lane. The center is open Wednesday and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. This service is also free for Louisville residents.

The junk disposal day is a partnership between the Louisville Metro Solid Waste Management Division and Waste Management of Kentucky.

For bulk waste junk disposal throughout the year, residents may drop off up to three household items, at no charge, at the Louisville Metro Waste Reduction Center, 636 Meriwether Avenue, Tuesdays through Fridays from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., and Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

For more information, residents may visit www.LouisvilleKy.gov/solidwaste or call MetroCall at 311 (or 574-5000).
